Hello, Sleep

For about a year now, I’m been suffering with terrible insomnia. It started small, she restless legs that were annoying when trying to fall asleep. Then it gradually got worse. And I mean W.O.R.S.E. Being up until 4-4:30am every night and running on just a couple hours of sleep is not ideal when you’re the alarm clock and reminder app for a 4, 7, and 10 year old. I don’t know about you, but consistently getting that little sleep really affects my patience levels!

I am not a medicine taker. I rarely take pain killers when I have a headache, so choosing a supplement to try and help with my sleep patterns wasn’t a quick, spontaneous purchase. It took months of thorough research, asking others a lot of questions, and finally making a decision and purchasing it…only for it to sit on my nightstand for a month before ever opening the bottle.

My Magnesium Research

I neeeeeed to use something that isn’t going to cause nausea. That’s a hard no for me, it’s not a trade off I’m willing to make. Here’s a list of my top priorities:

  • easy to digest
  • multi-benefits
  • natural

I ended up landing on Magnesium, but that didn’t mean the search was over. There are SO MANY options, and after speaking with my doctor and doing hours of research online, I settled on Magnesium Bisglycinate. Here are it’s benefits:

  • Primary Benefit: Well-known for its ability to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve sleep quality due to the calming properties of glycine.
  • Absorption: Generally well-absorbed and gentle on the digestive system.
  • Ideal for: Individuals seeking to reduce stress, improve sleep, and support muscle relaxation.

This is not to be confused with Magnesium Citrate, which is commonly used to address constipation due to its laxative effect.

There’s also Magnesium Glycinate, which from my research is essentially the same as Byglycinate, except the latter has two glycine molecules bound to a magnesium ion, possibly making it even easier to digest. Easier to digest? That’s was a win for me!

What I Landed On

This is the Magnesium Bisglycinate that I chose, because it has no fillers (read: crap you don’t need), is premium grade and has thousands of great reviews, and is Canadian made under strict GMP regulations.

The Difference It’s Made

From the very first night that I took one, I noticed a difference. I felt calmer in bed and less agitated. I fell asleep faster (ANYTHING is better than still being up at 4am, but I was asleep within 30 minutes). I feel more energized when I wake up in the morning and don’t feel as sore getting out of bed.

Last night we got home late from being out. By the time we were showered and in bed I remembered that the Magnesium was in my overnight bag downstairs, I couldn’t be bothered to get up. Cue an hour later still trying to fall asleep, legs as restless as ever. Finally got up and took one and I was sound asleep within 45 minutes. I’ll count that as a win!

I’ll reiterate this again:
