I consider myself to be quite the Christmas Tree snob, so trust me when I tell you…this one is gooooooood.

Traditions are EVERYTHING at Christmas
I’m not a trendy Christmas decor girl. I’m a Collected Christmas decor girl. Ornaments with meaning and memories. That one my daughter made her first year of kindergarten. The one we got on our family trip to Halifax last year. Let’s not forget the one’s we got on our honeymoon or the beautiful set I chose last year as heirloom pieces to pass down to my kids one day from Balsam Hill. This is why, until last year, we had the same Christmas tree since our first Christmas as a married couple in 2010. Let’s not even get into how long it took me to find that one and how it juuuuuuust fit in our family room. But I’m willing to sacrifice space for a full, thick, beautiful tree! The bulbs slowly started burning out though on that original tree…first the middle section, then the bottom, then finally the top. I still put it up every year though, just now I have to add my own lights (not my favourite part!)
All this to say, when I tell you this new tree that I picked out for our newly finished basement family room/home cinema is THE BEST tree of 2025, you know that carries weight!
One of the first things I think about when designing a living space in our home is where is the tree going to go? I know, it’s a couple months out of the whole year, but it’s an important couple of months, and a tree isn’t exactly something you can squeeze into a too tight space.
It was no different when I started designing the basement family room. I could envision the beauty of a green lit up tree against the moody black walls with intricate wall mouldings. Such a vibe.

The BH Fraser Fir Flip Tree
You read that right. The. Flip. Tree. I thought the idea was cool when I saw it online but when it was delivered and I actually tried it…OMG. It made set up so easy and is going to be a game changer at the end of the season when I just need to flip it over and roll it into storage. Because let’s face it, figuring out storage for our Christmas decor is half the battle when deciding what to buy.
So how exactly does the flip tree work? Well, it’s on a stand on wheels that lock. You simply follow these steps:
- Lock the wheels
- Push the lever with your foot
- While pushing the lever, pull the top of the tree towards you then down, clicking it in place against the “trunk” of the tree
- Connect the top piece with the top of the “trunk”, lining up the arrows
- Use the included gloves to keep your hands comfortable while you do some light fluffing
- Plug the tree in and, if applicable, choose the colours you’d like your lights to be (with the model I chose, you can pick between white, colourful, or white and colourful)
Why I Love It
I mean, it’s beautiful, that’s obvious. But it’s also convenient. Not only does it flip over and roll easily for storage, but it actually just rolls right out of the box too! Literally…you open the side of the box and roll the tree right out. The wheels are great and don’t scratch the floors at all. That’s another major selling point for me. I have enough projects on the go, I don’t need to add fixing the floors after Christmas to my list! With the height I selected (6.5 feet) there are over 2070 branch tips and 750 lights, the perfectly full and bright Christmas tree! The remote is the cherry on top so we can change the colours and turn the tree on and off without searching under all our presents for the build in switch (which is also still there in case my kids lose the remote. IYKYK). This tree comes in several different sizes, from 5.5 feet up to 12 feet, and also comes in Full or Slim options. Actually, there’s several other styles that are available with the flip function…you can find them all here on Balsam Hill’s Website.
I always love to plug our Christmas trees into wifi receptacles so that I can turn the tree on and off from my phone!
What’s in the box?
Here’s everything that comes in the box:
- tree base
- tree top
- storage bag
- 2 sets of gloves
- extra bulbs
- spare wheel
- instructions
- assorted hardware

A Statement Collar
A new tree means a new skirt or collar. It just finishes off the tree and makes it all look thought out and put together. I’ve only ever had skirts and since we’re pressed for space down here I thought a collar would keep things in place and tidy. This is a home cinema / moody family room so I wanted something that would stand on it’s own against the black walls and dark furniture, so I decided on Balsam Hill Canada’s new Antiqued Mirror Christmas Tree Collar. The brass piping and antiqued mirrors are THE PERFECT addition to the basement family room, and I think it’s just classic enough that it won’t feel dated in a few year’s time. Which is perfect for me, because remember, the idea is collected, not trendy!

It comes in 3 pieces and is so easy to assemble with the hidden clasps and dowels.

Storage Solutions
Ok, so the tree flips over and stores itself but what about ornaments? For 15 years I’ve been wrapping my ornaments in paper towel then carefully placing them in old smaller boxes like cracker boxes, then again placing those boxes into large plastic storage bins. This works great…except it kinda doesn’t. We’ve lost a few ornaments to breakage and there’s always so much wasted space since the boxes don’t fit perfectly together in the containers.
I feel like a total grown up now because we decided it’s time to get a proper storage container for all our collected ornaments. Since I know we’ll be collecting many more ornaments over the years, I decided the Deluxe Rolling Ornament Storage Case for 150 ornaments was the best option for us.
I love that we can customize the ornament sections to best suit our needs, with larger and smaller spaces for the variety of ornaments we’ve collected. It’s also working great for storing some of our other Christmas decor, like our nutcracker and snowman statues, as well as the candle ornaments that I’m so in love with. The drawers can be taken out easily, so there’s no need to carry the whole thing upstairs to decorate our main tree. We can bring up one or two drawers at a time.
There is a bit of assembly when it arrives, but is super straight forward and easy to do, no tools involved (other than the Allen key they provide).

Get The Look
Here’s a list of everything I have from Balsam Hill Canada that is now part of my Collected Christmas decor that I will be using year after year! As of the time this is published, everything on this list is on sale!
- The BH Fraser Fir Flip Tree
- The Antiqued Mirror Christmas Tree Collar
- The Deluxe Rolling Ornament Storage Case for 150 ornaments
- Antiqued Snowflake Christmas Ornament Collection (in Gold and Copper)
- Angels Capiz Ornament Collection
- Lodge Faux Fur Tree Skirt (5ft)
- Outdoor Letters to Santa Mailbox
- Scents of the Season Diffuser
- Colour-Changing LED Christmas Tree Candles (in white)
- BH Balsam Fir® Tree (7.5 feet)
The tree looks even better down here than I had imagined it would and adds a coziness that is inexplicable. So much so that we’ve decided as a family to ask Santa to deliver our stockings and gifts down here instead of by our main tree upstairs. Christmas morning is going to be so magical!
Until next time,
Oli
